Peace Garden

The Peace Garden, located adjacent to the Yoga Center, is a place of calm and contemplation amid the whirl of our urban lifestyles.  At its center is a Peace Prayer Pole expressing in four languages:  May God Bless this Earth with Peace. Its motto is by the Ninth Sikh Guru, Teg Bahadur: “Neither do I strike fear nor do I accept fear.”

In November 2000 Sikh Dharma of Kansas City, Missouri, Inc. purchased a large parking lot next door to the Yoga Center. The vision was to provide off-street parking for residents and students and to transform a portion of this once-abandoned and neglected lot to an attractive meditation area where people of all faiths, ages, ethnic groups and abilities can relax, pray, reflect, meditate and conduct ceremonies together for:

  • The enhancement of inner and outer peace, which produces feelings of well-being, love and generosity and reduces feelings of fear, anger, grief and anxiety
  • The development of community and inter-faith harmony, which increases understanding, acceptance and tolerance.

The undeveloped garden was dedicated in April 2001 through an inter-faith ceremony which included Sikh, Hindu, Native American, and Christian prayers and ceremonial planting of flowers around a meditation circle. A wooden fence was installed along 3 sides of the lot, providing a boundary for the area. Asphalt was replaced with soil, which was has been planted with prairie grass, trees, shrubs, bulbs, and plants, largely native to the Midwest. The colors of the plants around the meditation circle follow the colors of the chakras, going from red at the entrance to white/purple around the prayer pole. The center of the circle is carpeted with Roman Chamomile, which is soothing and relaxing.  A Meditation Gazebo provides shelter for small yoga classes and private meditations.  The Peace Garden is a favorite location for Full Moon Meditions in warm weather.

Visitors are welcome to come and contemplate or meditate. Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, and using drugs are not allowed anywhere on the property.

Future plans include the installment of a water feature and shrubs near the gazebo and the planting of more perenniel flowers.
Donations of volunteer time, native plantings, cedar bark mulch and cash are always welcome. Please contact Sat Inder at (816) 561-5337 to volunteer or make a donation. We and our neighbors are grateful for your support.

“You can vibrate peace, you can project peace. One mind is a part of the universal mind.Even one soul can tune in and you can change the times.”

“Live well in your inner peace, in your inner strength. And when you feel weak, call on your soul, your friend. To start, sit down, and breathe one breath per minute. In exactly thirty seconds your soul will start communicating with you.”
Yogi Bhajan 9/10/95

“Peace is love, love is God, God is life, and you got to do it. One planet, one humanity, one mankind, one God.”
